Reflection - 6/1/2018
During this term, I did experiment way more with painting than I did in the previous year. I used more textures with acrylic and tried not to hate watercolor. I also did sgraffito for one of the first times as well, and I had more time to try new techniques.
The work I was the most proud of was the spiritual abstraction one, especially the warm/cool piece. It allowed me to have fun with the painting without much care if it looked good. It allowed me to express myself through abstraction, which is also one of my favorite art styles by far.
Right at the start of the semester I struggled with the paint-by-number simply because I haven't painted in almost a year by that point. It was time to re-learn the way to use acrylic paints, which I managed to do by the end of the semester.
One thing I would do to improve this class would be more mix-media projects. I don't exactly remember how many we had, but the usage of multiple mediums is always more exciting. Otherwise, I enjoyed this class despite some issues.

5/24/18
This is the sketch of the front of Kennedy. It was done in the "en plein air" style, meaning it was done outside. The area I chose had plenty of trees and part of the residential neighborhood. It had a vastness of green and blues. I focused more on getting details rather accuracy of the colors, hence why some of the blue in the sky is missing and the yellow of the paper shows through. This project was actually nice to do, except the fact it was blistering hot outside and bugs really do enjoy crawling over pastels.

3/29/18 - Passes
The goal of this project was to do the painting in a total of three passes, each one adding more detail to the painting. The first one was done by constructing a paper display. I did mine in more of a impressionistic style, thus why there are more shades including purple and brown in the paper. The flower study was done with a focus more on lighting and the reflection of the glass. The greens had shades of red in while the greens had a reddish-brown color. Overall, the assignment was good for practicing realistic lighting while experimenting with colors/shading of said colors.

5/24/18 - Rule of Three
The goal of this project was to use three colors in each section of the paper. It was done by oil pastels and each area would have a unique affect. I experimented with each area by using a different method of applying the oil pastels; some areas are blended stronger than others while some, like the green/blue swirl, have visible lines.

4/19/18 - Spirituality/Abstractions
These paintings are meant to represent our spirituality. Personally, I do not follow any particular religion, but I follow the emotions more than anything. It is most representative on slides #2 & #3. On slide #2, I abstracted an image of a heart which became invisible with the imagery of vines and swirls. It represents love and nature, two things that strongly influence me. I used dripping watercolor and layering to get the shine. Slide #2 deals with how I view myself. The cool colors represent a more stiff and rigid person while the warm colors represent more of a positive outlook. They do not mix, and the black represents how they can entwine but not mix.

Analysis 3/29/18
This project allowed me to experiment with different painting techniques while using bold colors, which I try to not do. I learned how to dull colors properly and have fun with shading folds. Textures also were exciting to experiment with. My greatest success with the painting was with the textures. The canvas had a unique feel to it because of the way I applied the paint. The struggles in the painting included where to use certain textures and shading the dress to make it look semi-realistic. |

Emily Durscher American / 6.15.2002 La Mujer Triste/ The Sad Woman, 2018 Acrylic on Canvas The Sad Woman is painted Durscher's characteristic style of thick layering of paints (impasto) to get strong textures on the canvas. The color usage is bold and bright; warm and cool colors as well for contrast. The backdrop starts off with a deep blue and translates to a dark green at the bottom. Her dress is orange and red with blue-green leaf patterns trailing down. The orginal subject was wearing plain white and seemed to be in despair, but this piece focuses on sadness amidst the "finer" things in life. The painting was inspired by "The Swing After Fragonard" by Yinka Shonibare which is a sculpture with bright dutch wax fabrics. |
2/16/18 - "Paint by Number"
The "sophisticated paint by number" project involves the choosing of a fabric swatch, tracing the design to a piece of paper with graphite paper, and dividing it into six sections. The color wheels were meant to show how value, colors, and intensities work. And once the paper was divided, you'd paint it by the complements of it, such as the opposite colors, intensities, and then you would match the colors to the original fabric.
- One thing I did learn was it's important to mix the colors exact so they actually match the fabric. It did help with that.
- Based off how the color wheels turned out and the state of my project, I'd say there was few successes. But the color matching was decent enough and I attempted to get the pattern to match the fabric as exact as possible.
- The small, fine lines in this project were a bit of a problem for me. The swatch I chose also had a total of four colors in it, so it looks sort of dull, even with the complements. And it has been awhile since I have worked with acrylic, so this project was sort of re-learning the basics again of acrylic paints.
- Intensities are blended with the complement colors of the original value while values are blended with black ot white (tone and such). So the values become closer to a black or white while intensities become duller or more eye-popping.
